Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common issue that can significantly impact your daily life, making simple tasks like lifting, reaching, or even sleeping difficult. The shoulder joint is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, all of which can be affected by injury, overuse, or degenerative conditions.

The shoulder is a "ball-and-socket" joint, where the head of the upper arm bone (humerus) fits snugly into a corresponding space in the shoulder blade (scapula). A thick layer of cartilage covers the ends of the bones, preventing them from rubbing together. Additionally, fluid-filled sacs called "bursae" help cushion the tendons, protecting them from friction against the bones. The tendons in the shoulder attach the muscles to the bones, forming what is known as the rotator cuff.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain:

Injuries: Trauma from falls, accidents, or sports can lead to sprains, strains, tears, or fractures.

Overuse

Rotator Cuff Issues (torn shoulders)

Frozen Shoulder: A condition where the shoulder becomes stiff and painful due to inflammation, limiting movement.

Arthritis

Nerve Compression: Conditions like a pinched nerve in the neck may cause referred pain in the shoulder.

Symptoms of Shoulder Pain:

Dull, aching, or sharp pain in the shoulder joint

Limited mobility or stiffness, making it difficult to raise the arm

Weakness or difficulty lifting objects

Swelling, tenderness, or a feeling of instability in the shoulder

Your shoulders are incredibly versatile, with the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, allowing you to perform a wide variety of physical tasks. An injury to your rotator cuff can cause arm weakness, difficulty reaching behind your back, and disrupted sleep due to pain. Surgery may be required depending on the severity of the tear, but often, targeted physical therapy can effectively reduce pain and restore strength to the rotator cuff, compensating for partial tears.
