Gait Disorders

Gait disorders refer to abnormalities in the way a person walks. These disorders can be caused by various medical conditions, injuries, or abnormalities affecting the muscles, joints, nerves, or brain. Gait disorders can range from mild to severe and may significantly impact a person’s ability to walk, balance, or maintain independence. They can affect individuals of all ages.

Symptoms of Gait Disorders are:

Imbalance or difficulty maintaining an upright posture.

Limping or dragging one foot while walking.

Shuffling or short steps.

Asymmetry in arm swing or leg movement.

Inability to start walking smoothly or difficulty turning.

Stiff or jerky movements when walking.

Gait disorders can arise from a variety of conditions, including:

Neurological Disorders:

Conditions like Parkinson’s disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or cerebral palsy can impair the brain’s ability to control muscles

Muscle Weakness or Imbalance:

Weakness in muscles (such as those around the hip, leg, or foot) can lead to improper walking patterns, as the body compensates for the lack of strength.

Joint and Bone Issues:

Arthritis, hip dysplasia, or fractures in the lower extremities can affect how weight is distributed during walking

Nerve Damage:

Caused by conditions like sciatica, peripheral neuropathy, or spinal cord injuries, can disrupt communication between the brain and muscles.

Pain (Antalgic Gait):

Pain in the lower body from injuries or conditions like arthritis, plantar fasciitis, or tendonitis can result in compensatory walking patterns that avoid putting pressure on the affected area.

Balance Issues:

Conditions affecting balance, such as vestibular disorders or cerebellar ataxia

Muscle Disorders:

Muscular dystrophies and other degenerative muscle diseases weaken the muscles required for walking.

Age-Related Changes:

In older adults, factors like reduced strength, joint flexibility, or proprioception (body awareness) can contribute to abnormal gait, increasing the risk of falls.
