Hand Pain
Have you been feeling discomfort, aching, or soreness in any part of the hand, including the fingers, palm, wrist, or forearm? If so, you are not alone! Hand pain is common, but thankfully, our physical therapy offices in Bronxville, NY and Mamaroneck, NY are here to help! Hand Pain can be caused by a variety of factors, such as:
Injury:
Fractures
Sprains and Strains
Dislocations
Tendon Injuries
Arthritis:
Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Psoriatic Arthritis
Gout
Tendinitis:
De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: Inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, causing pain when moving the thumb or wrist.
Trigger Finger: A condition where one of the fingers becomes stuck in a bent position and may pop or click when trying to straighten it.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
Caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist.
Ganglion Cysts:
Noncancerous lumps or fluid-filled sacs that develop near the joints or tendons in the wrist or hand. They can cause pain if they press on nearby nerves.
Nerve Conditions:
Peripheral Neuropathy: Nerve damage that leads to pain, numbness, or tingling in the hands.
Ulnar Nerve Compression: Occurs when the ulnar nerve is compressed or irritated, often at the elbow (cubital tunnel syndrome) or wrist (Guyon’s canal syndrome).
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI):
Caused by repetitive hand movements, such as typing, writing, or using tools.
Dupuytren's Contracture:
A condition where the tissue under the skin of the palm thickens and tightens, causing the fingers (usually the ring and pinky fingers) to curl toward the palm. This can lead to pain and difficulty straightening the affected fingers.
Hand pain can range from mild to severe and may affect daily activities like gripping, typing, or holding objects. Some symptoms of hand pain include:

Aching or throbbing pain in the fingers, palm, or wrist.
Swelling or redness around the joints or tendons.
Stiffness or difficulty moving the hand or fingers.
Numbness or tingling
Weakness or inability to grasp or hold objects.
Clicking or popping sounds in the joints (e.g., trigger finger).
Pain that worsens with movement or activity.
